Expressing love is the basic reason we celebrate Valentine's Day. Creative and ambitious marketers attempt to determine how that love should be expressed. Most would have us define it as a day of cards, candy and gifts exchanged between committed couples with lots of romance. Without question, it can be a day of romance and for many, it should be exactly that. It is a huge money maker for retailers. On the other hand, there are about 30 million people alone on this special day. Let's take another look at what Valentine's Day can and should mean for each of us.

How do we find happiness and fun when we're alone on Valentine's Day? First, we refuse to buy in to the idea that this day is only for romance. Embrace the day and celebrate it your way. You can choose to have fun and get into the spirit of the day. Start your own fantastic tradition for a solo Valentine's Day. Remember, each individual has worth and value, and we are not defined by whether or not we are in a romantic relationship. Love can and should be expressed to family, friends and community.

Give this day some thought and plan something special for someone else. A simple note or card can brighten a day. It's a great time to go out with other single friends. If you decide to go out for dinner, a pizza and beer might be perfect. You certainly don't want to go to a restaurant packed with couples gazing at each other over their candle lit dinners. Or, plan a party for your single friends. Make some snacks, rent some movies (comedy only) and enjoy the evening. Get into decorating your home and creating a happy festive Valentine's Day. Another wonderful option is expressing your love by volunteering at a children's shelter or senior citizens center. Wear a Valentine's Day top, bake some heart shaped cookies and take the party to the kids or seniors. Your expression of love will light up their day and you will be rewarded with smiles and hugs. The best cure for even a hint of loneliness or sadness on any day is to focus on someone or some thing other than your own situation. There is a final step on Valentine's Day for flying solo successfully: pamper yourself. This can be a box of your favorite chocolates, a day at the spa, a beautiful piece of jewelry or an amazing outfit you've been eyeing. Or, you can simply relax with a great book, a cozy fire and a glass of wine.

Whatever you choose to do, my single friends, enjoy Valentine's Day and express your love. Don't hide from the day but instead embrace it by decorating and celebrating your way.
